How Is Asbestos Affecting Your Health?

Updated: Nov 25, 2022

Asbestos affects your health through breathing in the asbestos fibers. Friable asbestos is any material that contains more than one percent asbestos by weight or area, depending on whether it is a bulk or sheet material and can be crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by the pressure of an ordinary human hand. Since these fibers are so small, it can travel into the lungs and lodge itself deep into the lung tissue.

Asbestosis

Scarring of the lungs from the asbestos fibers. Usually occurs in people with really high exposure to asbestos over a long period of time.

Pleural Disease

This is non cancerous however it is a lung condition that causes the membrane that surrounds your lungs to become thicker or fluid buildup.

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer invades and blocks the lungs' air passages. Commonly caused by smoking but chances are increased with asbestos inhalation.

Mesothelioma

This is a rare form of cancer where the lungs, chest cavity, abdominal cavity, or other internal organs are covered by the membrane.
